At first glance, Eye of the Canvas appears to be a plain white canvas, a symbol of simplicity and stillness. However, its central feature—a cut-out eye-shaped hole—reveals an “eyeball” disc that tracks the movements of viewers as they pass by.
This artwork challenges the traditional dynamic of the museum experience, where visitors observe art from a position of control. Here, the narrative is flipped: the art observes its audience. The subtle movements of the “eyeball” create an uncanny feeling of being watched, evoking a sense of connection and presence.
Exploring themes of animism, Eye of the Canvas reimagines the relationship between people and objects, suggesting that art can possess a life of its own. By turning the gaze back on the viewer, the piece encourages a deeper reflection on the interplay between observation, perception, and the unseen energies that connect us to the world around us.
